On May 5, the 52nd Capital Universities’ Student Sports Games was held in RUC. 68 universities and 1508 athletes attended the Games. The 52nd Games marked the second time for RUC to hold the event, after 57 years. RUC made full preparations in the facilities building, including voluntary service, audience organizations and security. Two hundred forty volunteers and more than 100 staff took part in the organizing work. The Games were held by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education and Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports, and were undertaken by the Federation of University Sports of Beijing and Renmin University of China. 1508 University students took part in 23 individual events, including the 100 meter race and the 5000 meter race. More than 150 P.E. teachers worked as referees, including eight international-standard referees and more than 30 national-standard referees. There were also more than 50 international students who participated in the Games. After 4 days’ competition, RUC track and field team won two gold medals for the 3000m-steeplechase for men A and the 200m-race for men A; two silver medals for the 100m-race for men A and the long jump for women A; and four bronze medals for the 100m-race for men A, the triple jump for women A, the 3000m-race for men A, and the 4x100m-race for men A. RUC men’s team ranked 5 in group A, RUC women’s team ranked 8 in group A, and RUC team ranked 6 in the total score. Also, RUC won several additional awards including the Best Organizer. The Games closed on May 18 as Zhang Jianming, Executive Secretary of the Party Committee, passed on the flag to Liu Daqing, Vice President of Beijing Sport University. Huang Kan, member of Beijing Municipal Commission of Education and Du Songpeng, President of Federation of University Sports of Beijing, were in attendance. Outstanding athletes and universities were presented with awards during the ceremony. President Chen Yulu said that RUC has a long history with our countries’ sports undertakings, and always paid full attention to the important role that sports play in talents cultivation. Therefore, RUC had a positive influence to the P.E. education in the whole country, he said. RUC has undertaken P.E. education reform and cultivated students’ sport spirit, and will do so in future as well, President Chen said. The Games was first held by Beijing Municipal Commission of Education and Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports. Xian Lianping, Director of Beijing Municipal Commission of Education, said that this traditional Sports Games set a platform for universities to communicate with each other, both in P.E. education and sports level. It played a positive role to promote teenagers’ growing and to form a social atmosphere to cherish health and love sports.
