On July 6
th, the General Assembly observed the 35
th anniversary of the adoption of the CISG, holding a high-level panel discussion on the implementation of the Convention and intended reforms. Renmin University’s Executive Vice President Professor WANG Liming was invited to speak to the panel of experts and held a speech entitled “CISG and China’s Contract Law.”
In his speech, Professor WANG gave a detailed outline of the impact of the CISG on China’s own contract law and socio-economic development. He presented relevant information on the current challenges facing contract legislation in China. Vice Chairman WANG offered suggestions on the best way forward, stressing that learning from each other and building on the traditional wisdom of both the Chinese legal system and international law provided a strong basis for international trade and development. The Convention, as WANG noted, has played an important role in promoting the development of China’s market economy.
Addressing the panel of experts, the RUC Executive Vice President further highlighted the profound changes in economic transactions in the information age and the complexities these have created in the area of international contract law. The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, he stated, was commendably responding to contemporary challenges in its reform efforts and drafting of a model law on secured transactions. Professor WANG went on to introduce China's rapid development of e-commerce and the corresponding need for reforms in commercial law, resulting in the Chinese Contract Law Reform.
During his visit, Professor WANG also took the opportunity to tour the UNCITRAL headquarters in Vienna and converse with senior officials there on how to strengthen cooperation and promote fruitful exchange between the Committee and Renmin University.
