2015.09.25
From September 15th to 17th, Renmin University’s Chairwoman JIN Nuo led an academic delegation to attend the third round of the EU-China High-Level People-to-People Dialogue (HPPD) in Brussels. On the same trip, JIN Nuo visited the Free University of Brussels (VUB), where an agreement was signed to establish a Confucius Institute there in collaboration with Sichuan University. Finally, the RUC delegation joined in the closing ceremony of the Sino-European think tank forum “40 Years of Sino-EU Relations: Constructing a Strategic Sino-European Partnership for the Future.” 116 Madam LIU Yandong, Vice Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, and Mr. Tibor Navracsics, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, co-chaired the afternoon session of the HPPD in Brussels on September 15th. Premier LIU stressed the importance of mutual respect and seizing new opportunities for working together in this important year commemorating 40 years of Sino-EU diplomatic ties. She noted that China was looking forward to further strengthening its cooperation with the European Union in the areas of education, science and technology, culture, media, tourism and on social issues. Nearly one hundred scholars from China and all over Europe were gathered at the event to review the development of Sino-European relations over the past 40 years. In keeping with the theme of the EU-China HPPD, the Brussels Academy of China and European Studies (BACES) and the Chinese National Scholarship Fund with the support of Renmin University held a think tank symposium at the Free University of Brussels (VUB), where Premier LIU Yandong delivered a speech at the closing ceremony on September 16th. Premier LIU repeatedly highlighted the leading role Renmin University has played in the development of the “China-Europe Research Institute.” After the session, university leaders signed an agreement on the joint establishment of VUB’s Confucius Institute. On the final day of the visit, RUC’s JIN Nuo toured the United Nations University Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU - CRIS) and met with the institute’s director, Dr. Luk Van Langenhove, who expressed hopes that his institute and Renmin University will collaborate more closely in the future. The UNU-CRIS focuses primarily on research related to regional organization and integration (in Asia, Africa, Latin America). RUC’s Professor SONG Xinning, who hails from Renmin’s School of International Relations, is the institute’s first full-time senior research fellow of Asian descent. 39 On the afternoon of September 17th, Chairwoman Jin held talks with the Chinese Ambassador to Belgium to discuss Sino-EU academic exchanges, think tank initiatives, and other issues at length. 56
