2015.09.28
From September 16th to October 10th, Renmin University’s archival library and the university museum organized a joint exhibit of photographs featuring Soviet experts who came to Renmin University in the1950s.
Dozens of exhibits, which together trace the imprint left by a unique group of teachers and experts who came to Renmin University in the early days, were on display for the month-long exhibit at the museum near the university’s Liberal Arts Building.
Soviet philosophy and approaches to education were, as is well known, being built into the newly established political and social orthodoxy when Renmin University of China was first founded, while Soviet influences reached into all sectors, including Chinese higher education. In 1950, 36 of 233 faculty members at RUC were from the Soviet Union; between 1950 and 1956, a total of 98 Soviet experts came to RUC.
Renmin University was the first institution of higher learning in the People’s Republic to establish the new education system entrenched in Marxist philosophy and scientific socialism. The Soviet Union model was the primary reference point for the implementation of Marxist education; dozens of Soviet scholars came here to offer their expertise in curricular development, the compilation of teaching materials, and structural design. Their contributions are recognized as important for the development of Chinese higher education by Chinese leaders to this day.
The full archival collection, consisting of 500 pieces, including more than 300 photographs, is a unique testament to the history of Sino-Soviet cooperation and to the history of this school.
